Keep Upsell Cards Short & Impactful

Overloading upsell cards with too much information can make the cart look cluttered and overwhelming. If users are bombarded with details, they may ignore the upsell entirely.

  1. Shopify Implementation: Navigate to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit Code. Locate cart.liquid or cart-drawer.liquid template files.
  2. Design Specifications: Limit each upsell card to maximum 300px width x 120px height on desktop, with single product image (80x80px), product name (max 25 characters), one benefit line, and price.
  3. Content Structure: Use this exact hierarchy - Product image (left), product name (bold, 14px), single benefit statement (12px gray text), price (bold, 16px), and full-width "Add to Cart" button (40px height).
  4. Mobile Optimization: Stack elements vertically in 280px wide cards with 60x60px images. Ensure buttons are minimum 44px touch targets.
  5. Technical Setup: Configure AJAX functionality so upsell additions don't refresh the entire cart page. Use Shopify's Cart API for seamless updates.

  • AVOID: Showing 5+ upsell options simultaneously, creating choice paralysis. BEST PRACTICE: Display maximum 2-3 highly relevant upsells based on cart contents.
  • AVOID: Placing upsells after the checkout button where they interrupt purchase flow. BEST PRACTICE: Position upsells above or beside cart summary, never after primary CTA.
