Show a Clear Cart Total Breakdown (But Keep It Collapsible)

Users want to understand their total cost, but displaying subtotal, taxes, shipping, and savings all at once could make the cart. Too much information upfront can be overwhelming.

Why?

Make the total breakdown accessible but tidy by hiding details under a dropdown. Show the final price clearly, but let users expand to see the subtotal, taxes, and any applied discounts. This keeps the cart clean while maintaining full pricing transparency.

For Shopify stores, modify your cart template to create a collapsible breakdown interface that maintains transparency while reducing cognitive load.

  1. Navigate to Online Store > Themes > Edit Code and locate your cart template (usually cart.liquid or cart-drawer.liquid)
  2. Replace your existing total section with a prominent final price display using 24px font size, bold weight, followed by a subtle "View breakdown" link in 14px, underlined text
  3. Add a collapsible div below containing subtotal, shipping estimate, tax estimate, and applied discounts. Use 16px spacing between each line and muted gray text (#666666) for secondary information
  4. Implement toggle functionality using Shopify's built-in details and summary HTML elements, or add 10 lines of JavaScript for custom styling control
  5. For mobile, ensure the breakdown toggle is 44px minimum touch target and breakdown text remains 16px minimum for readability
  6. Test across iOS Safari and Android Chrome, as these handle collapsible elements differently

  • AVOID: Making the breakdown toggle too small or hiding it below the fold - users need to easily find pricing transparency
  • BEST PRACTICE: Position the toggle within 2 scroll actions of the main cart total, using clear microcopy like "See breakdown" or "View details"
  • AVOID: Showing estimated shipping as $0.00 when you haven't calculated real rates yet - this creates false expectations
  • BEST PRACTICE: Display "Calculated at checkout" for shipping until you have address information, or integrate real-time shipping calculators
  • AVOID: Using technical terms like "tax liability" or "shipping methodology" in your breakdown labels
  • BEST PRACTICE: Use customer-friendly language: "Shipping," "Tax," "Savings," and "Subtotal" with clear formatting
