Use Visuals to Showcase Collections, Not Just Names

context

A plain text list of collections doesn’t create excitement or help users understand what’s inside. Without visuals, shoppers may overlook key product categories.

Why?

Displaying products within each collection gives users an instant preview of what to expect, making the browsing experience more engaging. This visual clarity helps shoppers find what they’re looking for faster.

Content
  • Your homepage collection links show only text names without any product preview images
  • Homepage bounce rate exceeds 50% or time on page is under 30 seconds
  • Collection page traffic from homepage is below 15% of total homepage visits
  • You have 4+ main product collections that drive most of your revenue
  • Your Shopify theme supports custom sections or you can edit liquid files

Transform your text-based collection navigation into visual showcases that drive engagement and discovery.

  1. Audit Your Current Setup: Navigate to your Shopify admin → Online Store → Themes. Identify where collection links appear on your homepage (usually in navigation or featured sections).
  2. Choose Implementation Method: For most themes, go to Customize → Add section → Collection list. If unavailable, you'll need to edit your theme's liquid files or install a compatible app.
  3. Configure Visual Specifications: Set collection preview images to 400x400px minimum for desktop, with 2-3 product images overlapping or in a grid layout. Ensure mobile displays stack vertically with 300x300px minimum sizing.
  4. Select Representative Products: Choose 2-4 best-selling or newest products from each collection. Upload high-quality lifestyle images that clearly show the products in use.
  5. Add Compelling Copy: Include collection name, brief descriptor (5-8 words), and product count. Example: "Summer Dresses - Breezy & Comfortable (24 styles)"
  6. Test Responsiveness: Preview on mobile and tablet to ensure images load quickly and text remains readable.

Timeline: 2-4 hours for implementation, 1 week for A/B testing.

  • Collection Click-Through Rate: Expect 25-40% improvement from homepage to collection pages within 2-3 weeks
  • Homepage Engagement Time: Target 15-25% increase in average session duration on homepage
  • Collection Page Traffic: Monitor 20-35% boost in collection page visits from homepage referrals
  • Conversion Rate: Track overall site conversion rate for 10-15% lift over 4-6 week period
  • AVOID: Using low-resolution or inconsistent image styles across collections. BEST PRACTICE: Maintain uniform image dimensions and consistent styling with high-quality product photography.
  • AVOID: Showing too many collections (8+) which creates decision paralysis. BEST PRACTICE: Feature your top 4-6 performing collections prominently.
  • AVOID: Using generic stock photos instead of actual products. BEST PRACTICE: Always showcase real products from each collection to set accurate expectations.
  • AVOID: Forgetting to optimize for mobile load times with large images. BEST PRACTICE: Compress images and use lazy loading for faster mobile performance.
