Keep Collection Descriptions Short & Scannable

Long collection descriptions take up space and slow users down if they have to read past a block of text before seeing products. It disrupts their shopping flow.

Why?

Limit collection descriptions to three lines or less. Keep it concise, engaging, and product-focused. The goal is to set the context quickly and get users browsing as fast as possible.

  • Your collection pages have bounce rates above 40% or time on page under 30 seconds
  • Collection descriptions currently span more than 4 lines of text on desktop or take up more than 20% of above-the-fold space

Follow these steps to optimize your collection descriptions for better user flow:

  1. Audit current descriptions: Review all collection pages and identify descriptions longer than 3 lines (approximately 120-150 characters). Screenshot these for comparison.
  2. Rewrite descriptions: Limit each description to 2-3 lines maximum. Focus on the collection's unique value proposition and key product attributes rather than brand storytelling.
  3. Shopify implementation: Navigate to Online Store > Collections, select each collection, and update the description field. Keep descriptions under 150 characters to ensure mobile compatibility.
  4. Format for scannability: Use sentence fragments or short phrases. Avoid paragraph blocks. Consider using one compelling sentence plus 2-3 key product features.
  5. Mobile optimization: Test descriptions on mobile devices to ensure they don't push products below the fold. Descriptions should take up no more than 15% of mobile viewport height.
  6. Template adjustment: If using custom themes, modify the collection template to limit description display area and add CSS line-height controls for consistent spacing.
