Add a “Shop by Need” Collection for Smarter Browsing

Traditional category-based navigation doesn’t always align with how users think. If shoppers don’t know exactly what they need, they may struggle to find the right product and leave without buying.

Create intent-based collections that match how customers actually think and shop.

  1. Audit customer language: Review support tickets, product reviews, and search queries to identify common customer needs and phrases
  2. Create collections in Shopify: Go to Products > Collections > Create collection. Name collections using customer language like "First-Time Dog Owners" instead of "Beginner Supplies"
  3. Add to navigation: In Online Store > Navigation, create a "Shop by Need" menu item. Keep to 4-6 collections maximum to avoid choice paralysis
  4. Design collection tiles: Use 300x200px images with clear, benefit-focused headlines. Include 2-3 word descriptions like "Perfect for busy mornings"
  5. Mobile optimization: Ensure collection names are under 25 characters for mobile display. Test navigation menu doesn't overflow
