Show Both Review Count & Rating

A high review rating alone isn't enough—users also look at the number of reviews to gauge credibility. A product with a 4.8-star rating from 5 reviews isn't as convincing as one with the same rating from 5,000 reviews.

Why?

Displaying both the star rating and the total number of reviews gives users a quick, clear sense of product quality and popularity. This reinforces trust, reduces hesitation, and encourages more users to convert.

Content

This optimization is essential if your store shows these patterns:

  • Product pages with conversion rates below 3% despite having customer reviews
  • High bounce rates (above 60%) on product pages with good ratings but low review counts
  • Analytics showing users spending less than 30 seconds evaluating products before leaving
  • Your review platform supports displaying both metrics (most Shopify review apps do)
  • You have products with varying review volumes across your catalog

For Shopify stores, follow these implementation steps:

  1. Access your review app settings (Judge.me, Yotpo, Loox, etc.) and enable "show review count" alongside star ratings
  2. Position the combined display directly under your product title, using format: ★★★★★ 4.8 (1,247 reviews)
  3. Set font size to 16-18px for desktop, 14-16px for mobile, with review count in a slightly muted color (#666 or #777)
  4. Ensure 8-12px spacing between stars and number rating, with review count in parentheses
  5. For custom implementations, use this CSS structure:

Timeline: 30-60 minutes for most review apps, 2-4 hours for custom implementations. Test on mobile devices to ensure proper alignment and readability.

Track these metrics over 3-4 weeks post-implementation:

  • Product page conversion rate: Expect 8-15% improvement, especially on products with 50+ reviews
  • Time on product page: Look for 10-20% increase in average session duration
  • Add-to-cart rate: Monitor for 5-12% lift, with higher improvements on high-review-count products
  • Bounce rate from product pages: Target 8-18% reduction as users gain confidence faster
  • AVOID: Displaying review count in tiny, hard-to-read text that users miss completely
  • BEST PRACTICE: Make review count at least 75% the size of your star rating for clear visibility
  • AVOID: Showing review counts for products with fewer than 3 reviews, which can hurt credibility
  • BEST PRACTICE: Hide count display for low-review products and show only stars until you reach 5+ reviews
  • AVOID: Inconsistent formatting across product pages that confuses users
  • BEST PRACTICE: Standardize the exact format and positioning across your entire product catalog
