Keep Collection Headers Short & Punchy

Long, overly descriptive collection headers slow users down when the main goal is to get them to browse products. If users have to process too much text, it disrupts their flow.

Why?

Use concise, action-driven headers that immediately set the context (e.g., "Best Sellers," "New Arrivals," "Winter Essentials"). Keep the focus on getting users to products quickly, ensuring a smoother and more engaging shopping experience.

  • Your collection pages have bounce rates above 60% or time-on-page under 30 seconds
  • Collection headers exceed 4-5 words or take up more than one line on mobile devices
  • You're running Shopify, BigCommerce, or WooCommerce with customizable collection templates
  • Your store gets 1,000+ monthly visitors and you want to improve product discovery flow
  • Analytics show users aren't scrolling past collection headers to browse products

Start by auditing your current collection headers across all product categories. Headers should be 2-4 words maximum and under 25 characters total.

  1. In Shopify Admin, navigate to Online Store > Themes > Customize
  2. Select Collections template and locate the collection title section
  3. Replace descriptive headers with action-focused alternatives: "Premium Winter Coats for Every Occasion" becomes "Winter Essentials"
  4. Set header font size to 24-32px on desktop, 20-24px on mobile with maximum 2 lines of text
  5. Add 16-24px margin below headers to create clear separation from product grid

For custom implementations, use this CSS structure:

Test headers on mobile devices to ensure they don't wrap to multiple lines. Implementation time: 2-4 hours depending on the number of collections.

  • Collection page bounce rate should decrease by 8-15% within 2-3 weeks
  • Products viewed per collection session should increase by 12-25%
  • Time spent on collection pages should increase by 20-35% as users browse more products
  • Collection-to-product click-through rate should improve by 10-18%
  • Use Google Analytics 4 Enhanced Ecommerce or your platform's built-in analytics to track these metrics weekly
  • AVOID: Using SEO-stuffed headers like "Best Premium Organic Cotton T-Shirts for Men" on collection pages. BEST PRACTICE: Use "Men's Tees" and optimize SEO through meta titles instead.
  • AVOID: Making headers so vague they lose meaning ("Things" or "Products"). BEST PRACTICE: Be specific but concise like "Running Shoes" or "Desk Accessories."
  • AVOID: Inconsistent header formatting across collections with varying font sizes or styles. BEST PRACTICE: Maintain uniform styling with your brand's header hierarchy.
  • AVOID: Forgetting to test mobile responsiveness where longer headers often break layout. BEST PRACTICE: Preview on actual mobile devices, not just browser dev tools.
