Prioritise Readability

If users struggle to read your text due to small font sizes, low contrast, or cluttered design, they may give up and leave. Poor readability creates frustration and weakens your message.

Why?

Use a clear, legible font size, maintain sufficient contrast between text and background, and ensure enough spacing for easy scanning. Readable text keeps users engaged, improves comprehension, and leads to higher conversion rates.

Start with your product page typography foundation. In Shopify, navigate to Online Store > Themes > Customize and access your product template settings.

  1. Set minimum font sizes: 16px for body text, 18-20px for product titles, 14px minimum for price/specs. On mobile, increase body text to 18px for better readability.
  2. Ensure contrast ratios meet WCAG standards: 4.5:1 for normal text, 3:1 for large text. Use tools like WebAIM's contrast checker to verify your color combinations.
  3. Add proper spacing in your theme's CSS: line-height: 1.5-1.6 for body text, margin-bottom: 1em between paragraphs, and at least 24px spacing between major sections.
  4. Choose readable fonts: system fonts like Arial, or web-safe options like Open Sans or Roboto. Avoid decorative fonts for body text and product information.
  5. Test on actual mobile devices, not just browser dev tools. Text that looks readable on desktop often becomes cramped on mobile screens.
