Reward High-Value Purchases with Free Gifts

Users may hesitate to choose a higher-priced bundle or premium item if they don't see an immediate added benefit. Without an extra incentive, they might opt for the lower-tier option or abandon the cart.

Why?

Encourage higher spending by offering exclusive free gifts for premium purchases. Use clear messaging like "Spend $150+ and get a free gift!" or "Upgrade to the Pro Bundle and receive a bonus accessory". This added value makes higher-priced options more appealing, increasing AOV while making customers feel rewarded.

  • Your average order value is below $100 and you have products or bundles priced $150+ that could benefit from incentives
  • Cart abandonment rate is above 70% and analytics show users frequently view higher-priced items but don't purchase
  • You have at least 1,000 monthly visitors and can afford to give away low-cost items (under $20 value) as gifts
  • Your Shopify store supports apps or custom code for dynamic messaging based on cart value

Set up dynamic free gift messaging that appears when customers view or add qualifying items to their cart.

  1. Install a free gift app like "Free Gifts by Secomapp" or "Automatic Discounts" in your Shopify admin. Configure thresholds at strategic price points (typically $75, $150, $200).
  2. Create compelling gift messaging using bright accent colors. Place banners 40px height minimum with contrasting text like "Spend $150+ get FREE premium samples!" Position above add-to-cart buttons and in cart drawer.
  3. Design mobile-first notifications using sticky bars or slide-up modals that don't obstruct the buy button. Ensure text remains readable at 14px minimum on mobile screens.
  4. Set up progress indicators in cart showing "Only $23 away from your free gift!" Use visual progress bars with your brand colors.
  5. Configure automatic gift addition in your app settings so gifts appear in cart when thresholds are met. Test the removal logic when customers reduce cart value below threshold.
