Make Desktop Actions Clear – Guide Users Visually

If users don’t realize a section is scrollable or interactive, they might miss key content. Assuming they’ll figure it out leads to frustration and lost opportunities.

Why?

Use arrows, dot indicators, or subtle animations to show users how to navigate. Clear visual cues make interactions intuitive, ensuring they explore your content fully instead of bouncing due to confusion.

  • Heat map data shows users aren't scrolling through product carousels or image galleries
  • You have horizontal scrolling sections, product sliders, or multi-step forms that aren't clearly navigable
  • Your store receives 1,000+ monthly desktop visitors where navigation clarity impacts conversion rates
  • You're on Shopify, WordPress, or custom platforms where you can add CSS animations and interaction indicators

Focus on your homepage's key interactive elements: product carousels, image galleries, and scrollable sections.

  1. Add carousel navigation arrows: In Shopify, edit your theme's product carousel section. Add arrow buttons with position: absolute styling, sized at minimum 44x44px for touch targets. Use contrasting colors with 70% opacity on hover states.
  2. Implement dot indicators: Below scrollable sections, add pagination dots using CSS. Space dots 12px apart, make active dots 8px diameter with your brand color, inactive dots 6px with 40% opacity.
  3. Create subtle scroll animations: Add CSS transforms that slightly bounce arrows every 3 seconds to draw attention. Use @keyframes bounce { 0%, 100% { transform: translateX(0); } 50% { transform: translateX(3px); }}
  4. Add "swipe" indicators on mobile: Show finger swipe icons for the first 2 seconds on mobile carousels, then fade out using CSS transitions.
  5. Test interaction states: Ensure hover effects work on desktop, arrows are visible against all background images, and animations don't interfere with screen readers.

  • Bounce rate reduction: Expect 5-12% decrease in single-page sessions, measurable after 2 weeks of traffic data
  • AVOID: Making arrows too small (under 32px) or low contrast - users won't notice them on desktop
  • BEST PRACTICE: Use minimum 44px touch targets with high contrast ratios above 4.5:1
  • AVOID: Adding animations that loop continuously - they become distracting and hurt accessibility
  • BEST PRACTICE: Limit animations to 3-5 seconds on page load, then stop automatically
  • AVOID: Hiding navigation controls completely on mobile - users still need clear interaction cues
  • BEST PRACTICE: Show swipe indicators or edge hints that reveal partial next slides on mobile
