Highlight Savings Clearly—Don’t Make Users Do the Math

When a product is on discount, simply showing the old and new price isn’t enough. If users have to calculate the savings themselves, many won’t bother—and you risk losing the impact.

Why?

Make the discount crystal clear by stating exactly how much they’re saving: “Save $50” or “30% Off – Limited Time”. This removes friction, increases urgency, and makes the offer compelling.

  • Analytics show users spending more than 15 seconds on product pages without adding to cart
  • You run frequent promotions but see less than 3% conversion rate improvement during sales

Transform your discount display from passive price comparison to active savings communication.

  1. Shopify Theme Customization: Navigate to Online Store > Themes > Edit Code. Locate your product-price.liquid file. Add savings calculation above the price display using {% assign savings = compare_at_price | minus: price %}
  2. Visual Design Specifications: Place savings callout in a contrasting color badge, minimum 16px font size, positioned 10px above the price. Use red or orange background with white text for maximum visibility
  3. Copy Formula: Display both dollar amount and percentage: "Save ${{savings}} ({{savings_percentage}}% OFF)". For orders over $100, lead with dollar amount. Under $100, lead with percentage
  4. Mobile Optimization: Ensure savings text remains 14px minimum on mobile, positioned directly above price with 8px margin. Test across iOS and Android devices
  5. Homepage Integration: Apply same logic to featured product grids and promotional banners. Use consistent styling across all touchpoints

Implementation Timeline: 2-3 hours for basic setup, additional 1-2 hours for mobile optimization and testing.

  • Add-to-Cart Rate: Expected 15-25% improvement within 2 weeks of implementation
  • Time on Product Page: Should decrease by 10-20% as decision-making becomes faster
  • Conversion Rate: Look for 8-15% lift in overall site conversion rate within 30 days
  • Revenue Per Visitor: Track using Google Analytics Enhanced Ecommerce or Shopify Analytics for 3-5% improvement
  • AVOID: Showing only percentage savings on high-ticket items over $200. BEST PRACTICE: Always lead with dollar amount for expensive products
  • AVOID: Using tiny font sizes under 12px for savings text. BEST PRACTICE: Make savings text equal to or larger than the sale price
  • AVOID: Placing savings information below the fold or after product images. BEST PRACTICE: Position savings prominently near the product title and price
  • AVOID: Generic savings copy like "Great Deal!" BEST PRACTICE: Use specific numbers with urgency indicators like "Save $47 - Limited Time"
