Keep Product Cards On-Brand for a Cohesive Experience

context

Generic product cards that don't align with your brand's aesthetics can make the shopping experience feel disjointed. If the design feels out of place, it reduces trust and brand recall.

Why?

Ensure product cards match your brand's look and feel by using consistent typography, colors, and design elements. This creates a seamless browsing experience, reinforcing brand identity while keeping the focus on the products.

Content
  • Your collections page bounce rate is above 60% or time on page is under 45 seconds
  • You're seeing less than 15% click-through rate from collections to product detail pages
  • Your product cards use default theme styling that doesn't match your brand colors, fonts, or visual hierarchy
  • You have sufficient monthly traffic (1,000+ collections page views) to measure meaningful improvements
  • You're running Shopify, Shopify Plus, or another platform where you can customize product card templates

Start by auditing your current product cards against your brand guidelines. Document your brand colors (hex codes), typography (font families and weights), and spacing preferences.

  1. In Shopify, navigate to Online Store > Themes > Actions > Edit Code
  2. Locate your product card template (typically product-card.liquid or card-product.liquid)
  3. Update CSS variables to match your brand: set primary color, secondary color, font families, and border radius values
  4. Ensure consistent spacing using multiples of 8px (8px, 16px, 24px) for margins and padding
  5. Optimize card dimensions: aim for 280-320px width on desktop, with 4:5 aspect ratio product images
  6. Apply hover states that align with your brand's interaction style - subtle shadows or color shifts work best
  7. Test mobile responsiveness: cards should stack properly and maintain 16px minimum touch targets

For brands without developer resources, use your theme's customizer to adjust available color and typography settings first.

Implementation timeline: 3-5 hours for basic styling updates, 1-2 days for comprehensive redesign.

  • Collections page engagement rate should improve 15-25% within 2-3 weeks
  • Click-through rate from collections to product pages should increase 10-20%
  • Average session duration on collections pages should grow by 20-30 seconds
  • Brand recall surveys or user testing should show improved brand recognition scores
  • AVOID: Using more than 3 different font weights or sizes on a single product card - this creates visual chaos
  • BEST PRACTICE: Stick to 2 font weights maximum with clear hierarchy (product title bold, price regular)
  • AVOID: Making cards too small on mobile (under 150px width) or cramming too much information
  • BEST PRACTICE: Prioritize product image, title, and price - hide secondary details like reviews or variants behind interaction
  • AVOID: Using brand colors that reduce text readability or CTA button contrast
  • BEST PRACTICE: Maintain WCAG AA contrast ratios (4.5:1 minimum) even when applying brand colors
